Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) transformed the world. Firstly, it is no secret that many of the most famous NFTs have brought in millions and sometimes tens of millions of dollars. However, when it comes to expensive non-fungible tokens, just how high can the numbers get?

It is not easy to say, as things in the NFT ecosystem are growing and evolving rapidly. But even though we can’t say how high the numbers will climb, we can say what the highest selling NFTs are so far.
It is important to mention that: while there have been collections and multi-NFT auctions that have brought in millions of dollars like Pak’s famous NFT, the $91.8 million Merge open edition – these are the most significant single NFT sales ever to happen.
We can start with XCopy’s “All Time High in the City.” It was sold for 1,630 ETH ($6.2 million) in January 2022, just several months after initially selling for 1,000 ETH. The animated artwork, which was minted several years ago, depicts the ferryman of the underworld transporting a man across the river Styx.
Before non-fungible tokens had received any truly significant mainstream news coverage, Beeple’s “Crossroad” became a meme surrounding the 2020 presidential race. Crossroad was created as a reflection of the political tension in the United States. According to Beeple, he had multiple versions of the piece ready, depending on who won the presidency.
Originally minted on October 30, 2020, “Crossroad” was sold for $66,666 to influential collector Pablo Fraile. Only several months later, it found a new home with faceless collector anonymous10 who paid 4400 ETH ($6.6 million).
Non-fungible tokens and Beeple
As you already know, there is no lack of expensive non-fungible tokens. We can move on to Beeple’s other creation.
Beeple’s “HUMAN ONE” is a unique NFT. As the first-ever physical piece from the renowned artist, both the NFT as well as the electronic sculpture went up to auction as a single lot via Christie’s 21st Century Evening Sale.
However, considering the massive sale of Beeple’s Everydays (we will get back to Everydays later), many were unconfident what this new, constantly-evolving digital masterpiece would fetch at auction.
Undoubtedly, the single most famous NFT sale (and the most expensive NFT sale) in 2021 was Beeple’s Everydays: The First 5000 Days. The price tag is very impressive: 38525 ETH ($69.3 million).
Not only was Everydays the most expensive NFT sale in history, but the event created a snowball effect throughout mainstream media, as well as brought the term “NFT” into households around the world.
We also need to mention Julian Assange and Pak’s Clock NFT. Several months ago, more precisely in February of 2022, the above-mentioned NFT became the second-most expensive single NFT ever sold.
Lastly, the NFT depicts a timer that counts the number of days Julian Assange has spent in prison. Notably, it was curated as part of Pak & Assange’s Censored collection, which also featured a dynamic, open edition. Interestingly, it was purchased by AssangeDAO for 16953 ETH ($52.7 million), an organization whose primary purpose is to fight for the freedom of Assange.
