One of the most sought visas is the temporary skill shortage or tss visa. As it also offers a path to permanent residency, it is an appealing option for workers wanting to stay in Australia. Continue reading to know about your eligibility for a TSS visa.

What should be your age?

There is no age bar to apply for this category of visa. However, if you are the primary applicant, you will need to have post-qualification work experience of at least two years. Your co-applicants can be your family members, such as your spouse and minor children.

Have you complied with your current visa conditions?

When applying from within Australia, you need to hold a relevant visa, such as a substantive visa, a bridging visa A, B or C. One of the common reasons a tss application gets rejected is that the applicant does not comply with visa conditions. E.g., submitting proof of having worked in the nominated position.

Are you nominated by your employer?

TSS applications need your employer to nominate your position to the Department of Home Affairs. You cannot apply till this step is done. Check if your employer is a Government approved sponsor or has at least applied to become one. Your employer must nominate you to fill an occupation on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List under relevant codes. You could be performing tasks associated with two roles. In that case, your employer has to specify what share of your workday is spent on each function. Improper nomination is another reason for rejection.

Are you already working for the nominating employer?

If you are already working for the employer who has nominated you and are in Australia, you can be working for an associated entity of the business. However, if you are working overseas, you must not be employed under an associated entity. In both cases, you must be employed in your nominated occupation and no other role. Exceptions are made in exceptional circumstances.

Have you been working in the occupation you have been nominated for, or a related field, for at least two years?

You are required to have at least two years of relevant work experience in the specified occupation or related field. You will need to keep all the relevant employment references handy. If you have relevant experience as a part of Masters or PhD requirements, you may submit proof of those.

Do you have proof of possessing the required skill?

The tss is a visa given to those positions which cannot be fulfilled by local talent. Your employer must show that they have undertaken the due procedure to try to fill the vacancy locally before resorting to you. On your part, you should certainly possess the skill that is being sought. You might need to undertake a mandatory skills assessment as part of the visa application process. Contact your consultant on rules regarding your specific job.

Do you have the necessary health clearances and insurance?

You and secondary applicants will need to organise health examinations before applying for a TSS visa. The reports of the examinations are generally valid for a year. The health examination requirements vary depending on your stay in Australia, your country of origin, your profession and age.

As a TSS visa holder, you and your dependents will be personally liable for your health. Depending on where you apply from, you must be covered for the entire duration of your stay.

These, along with the necessary English proficiency and character certifications, will make you eligible to apply for a tss visa. Consult your legal advisor to understand the associated time frames and additional requirements to make your visa application process as seamless and hassle-free as possible.
